-Schechner’s life partner, Carol Martin -the researcher and professor of drama, New York University- accompanies him in his visit to the festival.
Sharm El-Sheikh International Theater Festival for Youth (SITFY) -headed by director Mazen El-Gharabawy- announces a great surprise through honoring the iconic American international theatrical director, Richard Schechner during the proceedings of the seventh edition, held under the auspices of the Egyptian Minister of Culture, Dr. Nevine Al-Kilani and South Sinai Governor, Major General Khaled Fouda. On November 25, theater lovers will meet Richard Schechner, veteran actress Samiha Ayoub -SITFY’s honorary president-, veteran actor Mohamed Sobhy -president of SITFY’s higher committee- and other stars and iconic international and Arab figures.
SITFY’s Founder and Chairman, director Mazen El-Gharabawy states that honoring Richard Schechner and choosing him as the iconic international figure in the seventh edition emphasize the great international presence of the festival on the agenda of the ten most prominent festival worldwide. The presence of this exceptional scholar and theatrical director on the Land of Peace, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt is regarded as a significant event on the international level. Furthermore, Schechner’s presence supports the development of the festival, promotion of theatrical arts, and sharing international experiences. Since the sixties of the past century, Schechner has been one of the most prominent theatrical figures. He is one of the iconic contemporary directors who invented distinguished perspectives towards experimentation and amendments of some approaches and directing theories worldwide. Throughout his unique career, Schechner succeeded in combining theatrical directing, playwriting, and scientific research in theater.
Schechner is one of the founders of performance studies. He is a performance theorist, theatrical director, author, editor of (TDR) and the (Enactments) book series, university professor, and professor of performance studies.
Schechner combines his work in performance theory with innovative approaches to the broad spectrum of performance, including: theater, plays, rituals, dancing, music, popular entertainments, sports, politics, performance in everyday life, and etc. in order to understand performative behavior, not just as an object of study, but also as an active artistic, intellectual practice.
Moreover, Schechner founded the Performance Group and East Coast Artists. His theatrical productions include: “Mother Courage”, “Dionysus in ‘69”, “Three Sisters”, “Faust”, “Seneca’s Oedipus”, “Hamlet”, “Oresteia”, “YokastaS”, and other prominent works.
As a theatrical director, Richard Schechner is best-known for his radical stagings of classical material. His hugely controversial “Dionysus” (1969 – 1970) is regarded as a watershed moment in the history of American theater, in which actors frolicked among the audience.
His most recent work “Yokastas Redux” (2005) features (Jocasta) -mother of Oedipus- competing with (Medea) and (Phaedra) for the title of “Baddest Mom” on a parody of the Jerry Springer Show.
SITFY’s Managing Director, Dr. Engy El-Bestawy adds: On November 25, Richard Schechner will deliver a special speech for the festival in its seventh edition, for he is a role-model for all world youth.
He is the founder of the Performance Studies Department, New York University. As a theorist, Schechner’s works have transformed the study and practice of theater production. He was able to provide information about: anthropology, sociology, religious rituals, folklore, and a wide-ranging multicultural perspective on the purpose of performance, to his scholarly works and productions. Dozens of Performance Studies Departments have been established at universities in the United States and Europe, influenced by Schechner’s experience.
Schechner’s books include: Public Domain, Environmental Theater, Performance Theory, Between Theater and Anthropology, and Performance Studies: An Introduction and Performed Imaginaries. Since 2018, Schechner’s books have been translated into 18 languages. His theatrical works have been presented in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. Moreover, Schechner directed performance workshops and lectured in all continents except Antarctica. He has been awarded numerous fellowships, including: Guggenheim, NEH, ACLS, and fellowships at: Dartmouth, Cornell, Yale, Princeton, and the Central School of Speech and Drama, London.
In the “New York Times”, Colin Turnbull described “Between Theater and Anthropology” as fascinating for anyone seriously interested in human behavior, for it is full of ideas that lead us to re-examine our thinking about all performances, from the most dramatic to the most seemingly trivial… If we have read diligently, Mr. Schechner has given us all the tools we need to appreciate the deeper social significanceof what is taking place in front of our eyes, instead of accepting it for what it seems to be.
Schechner has been working as the editor of the academic journal “TDR: The Drama Review” (1962-69, 1986-), which is regarded as the most significant publication in its field.
In 1967, Schechner founded the renowned experimental troupe “the Performance Group”, whose notable alumni include: Spalding Gray and Elizabeth LeCompte. In 1991, he founded the East Coast Artists Performance Exchange, which he continues to lead.
Besides, Schechner’s original plays, adaptations, translations, radical stagings include: “Yokastas”, “Yokastas Redux” (2003 and 2005), “Three Sisters” (1995-7), “Faust/Gastronome” (1993-94), and a legendary staging of “Mother Courage and Her Children” (1975-77, after Brecht). Currently, he is directing “Timbuktu” (2006) by Paul Auster and Saviana Stanescu.
It is noteworthy that the seventh edition of SITFY -headed by actor and director Mazen El-Gharabawy- is scheduled to take place between (25-30) November, 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt. Veteran actress Samiha Ayoub is SITFY’s honorary president and veteran actor Mohamed Sobhy is the president of SITFY’s higher committee. Dr. Engy El-Bestawy is the managing director of SITFY. SITFY is held under the auspices of the Minister of Culture, Dr. Nevine Al-Kilani and South Sinai Governor, Major General Khaled Fouda.
